Investing: You Know More Than You Think by Jeanna Gabellini It's true. You know more than you think in many areas of investing. Okay, that doesn't mean I want you to go out and invest in some arena that you are unfamiliar with. Just listen. What I want you to hear is:
If you will believe these facts, then I've fulfilled my purpose. You'll have to drop any other illusions you may have. You may need a bit of proof that this is indeed true. There's only one way to find out. Test the theory. I was coaching a client this week, who was ready to venture into some investing other than the stock market. He thought his main obstacle was that he didn't know how to research a company. I had him just guess at what the critical criteria was that he needed to make a smart investment. Next, he just guessed all the different ways he might get the information. He was right on the money (cute pun, huh?). When I acknowledged his brilliant guesses, he was a little surprised. He thought his thinking was too simple and easy. Well, it is that simple. Common sense will lead you into action. You just have to be curious and be okay with feeling a bit like a rookie. What you think may be a dumb question, usually is not. Any question that gets you more info is beneficial. You need to be more eager about learning than what you look like to others. A good way to find out about a new investing process is to watch someone who has experience with it. Make a three-way call to a company with an expert on the line. Have the expert do the talking and you just absorb. If you have a nagging question in your mind, blurt it out. That IS your intuition. If you don't ask it, that's a gremlin. Intuition. Whether you realize it or not ... it's always present. Most of us blow it off. When clients complain about a deal going bad, I always ask if there was a moment when they had a clue that something didn't feel right. I also ask if there was something they could have done differently. They ALWAYS answer yes to both questions. When you hesitate about a decision or feel funny about a deal ... STOP! I don't care if a real estate deal is about to close. Find out if what you're feeling is based upon fear or your gut. Sometimes you just need to tweak a deal a bit more. It's important that you listen to your feelings. Your body feels before the mind knows. Many times the numbers of a deal will look perfect on paper. Then your gut says something doesn't feel good about this. Ask some questions. Fish around. The partner you're dealing with may be the issue. Maybe it's the management team of the company. Doesn't matter. You can stop the process any time you want. You are in control. It doesn't matter. Make the deal feel good in all ways before you proceed. If you settle for something that doesn't feel right, your results will probably mirror that feeling. Let's address the abundance of resources and opportunities. Once you are clear about what you want, all kinds of events and circumstances will wiggle their way into your life. The trick is to believe that it exists. Last month, my business partner, Eva, and I were talking about getting free publicity. Within two hours she called me back and said our conversation sparked a thought. That thought led to a phone call. And through very unique circumstances, we were on a radio show for an hour interview within 48 hours. Coincidence? NOT! Every time you decide you want something, it is on its way to you. The moment you think, How will this happen? or It's too hard, it disappears. Try it. All it takes is telling a few people that you're interested in doing a certain type of investment and something will show up. Sound easy? It is. Your thinking mind wants to make it hard. Or it will convince you that the economy is down or that you don't know the right people. That is bull! Don't buy into those ego thoughts. Start fishing around for the knowledge and resources you need. Sometimes the resources show up in our lives in the oddest ways. All that matters is that they show up. I'll even help you a bit. There are an abundance of resources on this site to other websites I think will spark your imagination or give you detailed information in specific sectors of investing. And, of course, I think all of the seminars I teach and products I offer are really, really good. Am I prejudiced? Come find out and decide for yourself! I don't think you'll be disappointed in any action step you take. Just do something and enjoy the process. There's so much to learn and experience. Here's to a prosperous journey!
