Stop Regretting and Fretting I was teaching my Daily AMP teleclass this past week, and one of the participants complained that his debt wasn't going away. He said he'd paid several big payments towards his credit card bill and the balance is still huge. So, I started asking some questions about how this person actually felt about the debt. He said he felt bad because "everyone knows that credit card debt is bad." My radar went up. The coaching began. I guarantee that this person will pay off the debt in the next six months after our discussion. Did we talk about a plan to pay it off? Nope. Did we talk about how the debt got there? No, again. We talked about the perception that credit card debt is bad. If you feel bad about your debt that is current, you have no freedom. You will have background noise in your head like, "Shame on me for using that credit card." Or, "You are not very good with money" and "You should never buy anything on a credit card, again." All of these statements make you feel like a victim, weak, and or wrong. Not very empowering is it? When you are feeling guilty for something you did in your past, it makes it very hard to be powerful in your solution. When I coached our participant in the teleclass, we had him diffuse the guilt and focus on attracting more money, because that was more exciting to him. Of course, the outcome of that would be to pay off the credit card debt. It is a higher emotional vibration to focus on what you want that is inspiring. Guilt and shame are the most disempowering emotions you can experience. Not to mention, if all of your attention is going to "bad debt," guess what you will attract? More of the same kind of debt! And that is exactly what happened to this person. They kept paying big chunks of money towards their balance and they kept using the credit card. All the while feeling bad. At one point my co-leader, Mandy Birks, said, "Be regret-free on your way to debt-free." I loved it! Now, we are by no means telling you to go out and rack up the debt. But to feel bad about what has been done is simply useless. The only reason to look back at things you are not pleased about is to look at what you have learned through the experience. The learning is best done by being objective. Did your actions bring you the desired outcome? What might have been other options you could have chosen at the time? We do the same game on ourselves when we wallow in sorrow about how we didn't make out income goals last year or how we should've bought that piece of property. Our life is not a test on how well we do financially. We are all going to miss opportunities, be compulsive, be scared, think in the box, or be lazy at some point. Goodness! Soooo, what? Move on! Step up to the plate and swing again. Swing with more focus, power, and commitment. And swing joyfully! To judge yourself, is to create separation from self. No wonder we feel small when we do that. I want to say one more thing about debt. Many times we use
credit cards in times when we don't have cash. Be grateful for what the
credit card gave you. I used my credit card for the down payment on my
car a few years ago. I love that car and enjoying driving it daily! My
credit card afforded me the luxury of having an extra few weeks to attract
the extra $8,000. And I did. It felt better to charge the down payment
than to take it out of my savings. I had to do some quick thinking and
put some passion behind the cause to make sure I had the money when my
bill came. But it made me play bigger. I am grateful. One of the most empowering and highest vibrating emotions is appreciation and joy. You can even appreciate the lessons you've learned from every decision you've made in the past. So, look forward and backwards in your life with your highest good in mind. There is no such thing as a mistake -- only experiences. Copyright © 2004 Jeanna Gabellini |
